How We Met
May 2016. We swiped right on each other on Bumble. For those who don't know -- "Bumble" is a dating app, and "swiping right" is the way of saying you're interested in the other person.
Instead of starting the conversation with something nice, Becky kicked things off by questioning why Ray's profile said he liked West LA. "I'm going to try not to hold this against you... but you actually like West LA?" This turned in to a lengthy debate about what actually constituted West LA, which was an accurate preview of how things would go in our relationship.
After a very long back-and-forth on Bumble -- too long, in Becky's opinion -- we agreed to meet at a cocktail bar in downtown Santa Monica. We got along well enough there, so we moved on to a sushi bar nearby. Nearly everything about the sushi bar turned out to be terrible -- the food, the drinks, the atmosphere. But in spite of this, we chose to open up to each other in an unusual way there, and we each left the date feeling like we had met someone really special. And, clearly, we had.
May 2018. Ray proposed that we go on a Sunday morning hike up Baldwin Hills, a short hiking trail with a fantastic view of Los Angeles that's located a few miles from our home in Culver City. This struck Becky as odd, as Ray is rarely the one to initiate any sort of exercise. Still, when Sunday morning rolled around, Ray was ready to go -- and so off we went.
Upon reaching the top of the hill, Becky immediately wanted to go to the bottom and run up again -- she was here for a workout, nothing more. Ray had other plans, though, and had to fake being out of breath (100% fake, definitely in good shape, could have climbed the hill many more times, etc.) so our photographer friend Kristen could get in to position to capture the proposal.
After delivering a brief, heartfelt speech, Ray got down on one knee -- and Becky quickly said "yes"! We took some photos together on the hill, called our friends/family to let them know, and then went to Becky's parents' house for a small engagement party that afternoon.
From there, we got to planning a wedding -- a big day that we're looking forward to sharing with all of you!
Come to see us tie the knot, stay until they kick us out (11:45 pm, for those inquiring). We will provide transportation between the venue and our hotel block.
We planned our wedding for a Friday, so we could keep the party going on Saturday. There will very likely be tacos, margaritas, and some outdoor activities that will include lawn games and water.
